ABOUT LUMEN

Lumen is an art organisation, focused on themes of astronomy, light and the natural world.
Through artworks, exhibitions, residencies and seminars we aim to raise a dialogue about how humans have understood the sun, moon and stars throughout time, peering through the lenses of spirituality, science and ecology.
We are keen to understand how different civilisations have conceived of our skies, in a variety of time periods and in a range of locations. We draw inspiration from ancient, indigenous ancestors alongside cutting edge contemporary science and astronomy.

The co-directors of Lumen are Louise Beer, Melanie King and Rebecca Huxley.

The Story

In 2022, Lumen embarked on Glacial Movements and the Ghaib, an expedition to several glaciers in the Hunza region of Pakistan. The expedition culminated in a series of exhibitions in Pakistan and the UK, supported by the British Council New Perspectives programme.

In 2021, Lumen produced an exhibition for An Lanntair as part of the Hebridean Dark Sky Festival.

In 2020, Lumen received funding from Arts Council England, to produce a video commission, Our Night Skies, for 20 artists. The funding enabled Lumen to lead several online reading groups, seminars and workshops during the coronavirus pandemic period.

Lumen have been commissioned by the British Science Association, Green Man Festival, The Museum of Freemasonry, Blue Dot Festival, Phytology Nature Reserve, Vivid Projects Birmingham.

Lumen first launched at The Crypt Gallery in Saint Pancras on the Winter Solstice in December 2014. Since then, Lumen has curated exhibitions about a wide range of subjects including the detrimental effects of light pollution, the representation of voids and black holes.

From May 2015 to March 2022, Lumen ran a gallery space in the Crypt at St John on Bethnal Green. In their gallery Lumen curated group shows, solo shows and artist in residence programmes.

From September 2015 to September 2018, Lumen took 20 artists on an annual residency to the town of Atina, Italy, where the artists had an opportunity to create work in spacious studios. This residency included a number of trips to local observatories, art galleries and churches. The results of the work were then exhibited in The Crypt Gallery in London.
Lumen have also led residencies to dark sky environments in Cornwall and the Lake District.

In 2017, Lumen curated a large scale three-story exhibition at Ugly Duck, Bermondsey, entitled "School of Light". In March 2018, Lumen curated another exhibition at Ugly Duck about the concept of the Overview Effect and how viewing the Earth from space affects our collective perception of ecology.
